Some Common Myths Concerning B.tox Therapy
Wednesday, September 9th, 2009Sydney Botulinum therapy (BoTox for short) is now established amongst trendy Sydney society and now it has become a grooming essential for many in the city. Even so I never cease to be amazed by the insane gossip about this treatment.
Below are some of the myths that I encounter in my work as a doctor at Star Cosmetic Medicine in Pyrmont, Sydney.
Misunderstanding # 1: BoTox will freeze my expressions!
Underneath the skin of the face are 60 or so muscles. Their extended use can result in the formation of wrinkles. Too many treatments of Botulinum Toxin have the effect of the musculature of the face looking less taut. The dose injected by most physicians are calculated to make you appear less tired, yet you will still be just as expressive.
Indeed the right quantity of BoTox in the proper place means an expressive face is saved whilst the fine lines undergo a softening effect.

Misunderstanding # 2: Botulinum is a toxic substance!
This to a small extent is right. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact pharmacological nomenclature. Too great a quantity can relax muscles that you do not want loosened or may make one extremely sick.
Pharmacists have an old expression ‘everything is poisonous – all depending on the dose’. A large dose of any medication will induce sickness. If you drink too great a quantity of water you will die.
Misunderstanding # 3: It will hurt!
In our clinic Star Cosmetic Medicine the doctor will use a hypodermic needle finer than a human hair. Some people compare the treatments to being bitten by mosquitoes. Certainly not painful compared to having a vaccination.
Misunderstanding # 4: My face will lose sensation!
False. Botulinum medicine works primarily on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not the nerves of sensation. Only the ability to relax your muscles is affected by BoTox injections.
Misunderstanding # 5. You can’t stop getting BoTox or the lines become more noticable!
This is also untrue.
You can expect BoTox to last for up to 3 months. Subsequent injections tend to last longer. Eventually as muscle strength builds up again the wrinkles will reappear bit by bit. Even So your lines definitely will not be deeper than when you started your BoTox therapy.
As A Matter Of Fact any lines will generally be less evident than if you had never had BoTox injections – even when you don’t persevere with the therapy. Mainly because your skin has had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ when the BoTox was effective.
